iPhone updates coming from Apple this week

The next iPhone software update is coming this week.

Many speculators claim that the coming update will be the 1.1.1 firmware which was (inadvertently?) hinted by Apple at their debut of the iPhone in the UK on the O2 network.

Here is what the iPhone will get:

  • iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
  • Customizable Home button

These are features that are probably coming, but might not show up this week. These will most likely be timed with the release of Leopard in October.

  • iChat
  • MobileFinder
  • Disk Mode
  • Clipboard
  • Keynote presentation player
  • Flash support in MobileSafari
  • enhancements to Mail
  • Phone to phone wireless photo sharing
  • File sharing over Wi-Fi via BonJour
  • .Mac syncing
  • software image stabilization in the camera

The iPhone will not get these features until a future hardware revision:

  • GPS
  • Connectivity to AT&T’s faster 3G network

Shout-out goes to Mike Cane for regurgitating the iPhone Death Star update.

I Digg McBuck

Yes its true. I certainly do. Happy almost birthday to me.

The deal with Snease

I bought the domain snease.com a few weeks ago with an idea to build a ‘make money online’ blog behind it. I’ve decided to roll the domain over here to yebot.net and just focus on this site for now. Here is the original artwork by comic book artist McBuck, developed especially for Snease.

Apple kills the iPod

Earlier today I posted some predictions for today’s Apple event wherein the entire iPod lineup was revamped. So how did I do?

The shuffles got a nice refresh. The nanos got a nice redesign, video playback and more storage.

The iPod is dead and gone. My forty gigabyte iPod from 2004 is now a relic of history. We have come to a fork in the road.

The first path is a familiar one. Yesterday’s iPod looks much like the newly named iPod classic. The iPod classic comes at attractive pricepoints, $249 for 80 gigabytes of storage and $349 for 160 gigabytes. 160 gigs! That’s sick!

The second path is the sexy awesomeness that fanboys have been waiting for. iPod touch. Its got Wi-Fi, Safari, YouTube app, Calendar app and the iTunes WiFi music store. The storage options leave something to be desired - not surprising due to wordwide high price and high demand for flash memory. An 8gig model will go for $299 and a 16gig model is selling for $399. It doesn’t appear that the iPod touch features the Google Map client found on the iPhone.

Other nice surprises today include the iTunes WiFi music store and the $200 price drop on the 8gig iPhone.

Apple to debut updated iPods today at “The Beat Goes On”

In about twenty minutes. El Jobso is going to appear in front of a crowd of select journalists at a special Apple event that is known as “The beat goes on.”

The Apple rumor sphere has identified three music-related possibilities to explain the event’s title. Here they are in order from lame to kick-ass.

1. Lame - “The Beat Goes On” was a song released by Sonny and Cher in 1967.
2. Semi-Lame - “The Beat Goes On” is the name of an upcoming Madonna album.
3. Kick-Ass - “The Beat Goes On” also appeared as a phrase in The Beatles final press release, issued April 10, 1970.

What’s Coming

We are at the tail-end of the back-to-school shopping season and the front-end of the Holiday wish-list building season. This is when Apple introduces new iPod models.

There is a new iPod nano to debut. It is almost certainly going to sport flash memory and a click-wheel like today’s models. The new models will have a new form factor, larger 320×240 pixel displays and video playback ability.

They might revamp the iPod shuffle. Yay.

The real hype surrounds the flagship iPod. Most enthusiasts would agree that the new iPod will sport a widescreen display. It will utilize some of Apple’s Multitouch technology which debuted earlier this year with the iPhone. Typically, a revamped iPod comes in at two price points; $299 and $399.

Predictions

Flash memory is still too expensive to fill the iPods to 30, 60, 80 or 100 gigabyte capacities. The largest iPods will still use hard drives.

If the nano gains video playback capability, then the only thing differentiating it from a full size iPod is storage space. To make the iPod more attractive, Apple is going to build Wi-Fi into it. And yes, it will gain most of the Internet functions that the iPhone has - Google Maps, Email, etc.

After today, Apple’s pocket portable family will look like this:

Apple iPhone: (iPod + Internet device + phone) - $499 and $599
Apple iPod: (iPod + Internet device) - $299 and $399
nanos and shuffles: (iPod) - $249 and under

Let’s see how my predictions hold up.
